More Challenging Relief from Your Lockdown Boredom
I’ve been rather easy on you up till now with my mind-lifting quizzes. Though continuing in the same vein as the first two, this one is more difficult, yet will prove more useful down the road we travel together toward a brighter and better future.
Back to the present, you will be better armed for that Memorial Day family beach outing when you’ll have to see your right-wing brother in law again.
OK? Pencils out. Answers below. No peeking. You’re on the honor system.
- How many electoral votes do the West Coast states of California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii have in total?
- How many of those votes went Democratic in the last presidential election?
- How many seats in the House of Representatives do the four states above have in total? (Your best estimate.)
- How many seats are held by Democrats and how many by Republicans? Answer in percentages OK.
- How many California House districts include Orange County turf?
ANSWERS
- Seventy-seven.
- All 77. The West Coast states (Pacifica) haven’t sent a single electoral vote for a Republican presidential candidate to Washington D.C. since 1992.
- Seventy seats.
- Of those 70 seats, 59 are held by Democrats, and 11 by Republicans; in percentages, that’s 84% to 16%. (A message there?)
- There are seven seats that include all or part of Orange County, long a bastion of ultra-conservatism in the Goldwater/Reagan West that was. As of November 2016, all seven are represented by Democrats…such a nasty insult to the memory of John Birch.
Stay well! Meet you in Pacifica!
